CEMETERY COMMISSION
MEETING MINUTES
April 20, 2004


Members present:  John Salomone, City Manager; Ted Wills, John Langham, Bea O’Hora, Comptroller; Elaine Hutson, Jerry DelFavero, Superintendent of Public Works; Debby McCormick, City Clerk; Michele McNabb, Registrar; Bill Jacobs, City Counselor; Kent Brandstetter.  Guest, Walt Aikman, Grow Auburn Trees

City Manager John Salomone welcomed everyone to the first meeting of this commission.  John Langham volunteered to serve as Chairperson of the commission.

It was agreed that a regular monthly meeting of the commission was not needed.  

Mr. Salomone credited City Counselor Bill Jacobs for being the driving force behind the renewed focus on the Cemetery Commission.  He distributed copies of Ordinance #10 of 2003 that re-activated and amended the Cemetery Commission Ordinance.

Mr. Salomone introduced Walt Aikman, Grow Auburn Trees.  Mr. Aikman did a presentation for the group on issues related to replacing trees at the cemeteries.

Issues discussed included:

ü       There is a lack of lots for new sales – would need to develop new section to increase.
ü       Value to City of financial investment associated with developing new section.
ü       Maintenance costs of maintaining cemeteries.
ü       Cost/benefit of Mausoleum or crematory run by city.
ü       Condition of lawn and landscape.
ü       Increasing fees for lots and openings.  (last increase 2 years ago)
ü       Cemetery records and the need for preservation and maintenance.

Items for action by next meeting:

ü       Ms. McCormick to look into finding by laws for commission.
ü       Mr. DelFavero and Mrs. O’Hora will gather budget information related to expenses and income.

The next meeting is scheduled for July 13, 2004 at 4:00PM.  The City Manager’s Office will send out reminders and an agenda.
